Commonly asked questions
What is counselling?
Counselling offers a safe, confidential space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with a trained therapist. Together, we look at what’s happening for you and work towards the changes you want to make.
What is psychotherapy?
The terms counselling and psychotherapy are often used interchangeably. Counselling is sometimes seen as shorter-term and more focused on current issues, while psychotherapy may explore deeper emotional patterns over a longer period. My work and training includes both, though I tend to describe myself as a counsellor as it feels less formal and more accessible.
How can counselling help me?
Counselling can help you feel understood, gain clarity, develop coping skills, and build confidence in facing challenges. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit.
Is counselling confidential?
Yes. Everything you share is confidential, except in rare situations where there may be serious risk of harm or a legal safeguarding requirement. I explain confidentiality clearly at the start.
Your personal information is handled with care and in line with the Data Protection Act.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is a gentle introduction. We talk about what brings you to therapy, what you hope to get from it, and how we might work together. It’s also a space for you to ask questions and see whether it feels like a good fit.
How often do sessions take place?
Most people begin with weekly sessions at the same time each week, which helps maintain consistency and support. As things progress, you may choose to move to fortnightly or occasional sessions if that suits you better.
How long is a session?
Sessions last 50–60 minutes. Longer sessions (up to 90 minutes) can be arranged if you feel more time would be helpful.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no set number. Some people benefit from short-term work; others prefer ongoing therapy. We review your progress regularly so you can choose what feels right for you.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed. You can contact me directly or book a free 20-minute consultation to see whether working together feels helpful.
What if I feel nervous or embarrassed?
This is very common. Many people worry about opening up at first. My aim is to offer a warm, non-judgmental space where you can talk at your own pace and feel supported throughout your process.
Where do sessions take place?
You can choose the format that suits you best - in my therapy room in Kirkstall, in my therapy room in Leeds 1, or online via secure video.
How much does counselling cost?
Sessions are £50 per hour.
I offer concessions for people on a low income or receiving benefits.
